Places to Go
Using Downhouse Farm as a base, there is no shortage of local attractions for you to visit. Whether looking for a day out with the family, somewhere to explore some Cotswold history or to get close to nature we have it covered! Here are a selection of our favourites…
Slimbridge WWT (5.1 miles)
Why not visit this beautiful wetland conservation centre, whether you are a keen bird watcher or a little explorer you’ll find something to keep you entertained. Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust is packed with bird hides, an adventure playground, an outdoor ‘Welly Boot Land’ water play area, canoe safari and lots of ducks and geese.
westonbirt arboretum (11.3 miles)
For a tree themed adventure Westonbirt Arboretum offers a tranquil escape. Boasting 2,500 different species from the far corners of the globe, you can traverse the Tree Top Walkway, wander a seasonal trail or look for the Gruffalo in the deep dark woods.
berkeley castle (5.8 miles)
An impressive March castle built in the late 12th Century and brimming with history. It’s set in some lovely gardens with a walled garden cafe and it is also home to a butterfly house during the summer months. Just check opening times before visiting; It’s closed through the winter and then open Sunday to Wednesday.
cattle country adventure park (5.1 miles)
A fun-filled farm park with attractions for both younger and older children; with numerous play areas, an animal experience centre, play barns, boating lake and much more. Check opening times as they are limited to weekends through the winter period.
woodchester Park and mansion (6.0 miles)
The mansion is grade I listed Victorian Gothic house, which is an unfinished masterpiece. It is located in a park in a hidden Cotswold Valley, with beautiful walks through the woodland and around lakes, including a play trail. Check for opening times/days for the mansion and cafe. The park is owned by National Trust and is open daily for walks.
Gloucester historic docks (14.4 miles)
Gloucester is home to a remarkably complete example of Victorian docks, with warehouses standing tall over Britain’s most inland port. There is a working dry dock, a Mariners Chapel, Gloucester Waterways Museum and The Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum. The docks are also adjacent to the Gloucester Quays Designer Outlet where you can do a spot of retail therapy. If you are looking for food or refreshments, you’ll find a range of waterfront bars, restaurants and coffee shops here also.
newark park (6.4 miles)
A National Trust owned Tudor hunting lodge with beautiful gardens set over three levels, roamed by friendly peacocks. You can take in the lovely views from across the estate, which covers 700 acres some of which can be explored on way-marked trails.
Dyrham park (19.8 miles)
A National Trust ancient deer park with 17th Century baroque country house, which is surrounded by over 270 acres of formal gardens and parkland. Why not download one of their self-led walking trails to take you on a journey of discovery through history or to the best spots for sweeping vistas.
horse riding at Newbrook farm (2.6 miles)
Newbrook Farm Equestrian is a friendly family run, fully licensed riding establishment. They have horses of all sizes from Shetlands to Shires and cater for all levels of horse riding experience. With direct access to miles of off road hacking, this is a magical way to explore this stunning part of the Cotswolds.
canal boat hire (9.2 miles)
What better way to relax than to while away some time on the water by hiring a boat. We are fortunate to be so close to some beautiful canals here. From Saul Junction you can hop on a boat trip or charter your own through the Cotswold Canals Trust. Booking in advance is usually required.
Painswick rococo garden (14.6 miles)
Why not visit the UK’s only complete surviving rococo garden? In a hidden valley, this is a little local gem. Discover magical follies, lose yourself in the maze and wander through the woodland walk. Famous for the carpets of snow drops in early spring, it’s a lovely place to spend a few hours.

A conservation focussed fun family attraction that provides outdoor adventure, play and learning. At Bristol Zoo Project you can meet amazing animals from across the world, from the mischievous lemurs of Madagascar to magnificent European brown bears.
